Only after ten years that Popeye was introduced as one of the Thimble Theatre strip characters. Later on, this sailor became the main focus of the whole strip, thus, entitling the series after his name. In 1933, Fleischer Studios adapted the comic strip into a series called Popeye the Sailor, which were theatrical cartoon shorts for Paramount Pictures. When Segar died in 1938, the strip was still carried out by several writers and artists, many of whom previously worked with Segar. And the cartoons production continued until 1957.

Popeye costumes come in so many variations but each one still carries the classic signature look of a sailor. Online stores and costume retail shops offer a wide selection of this ensemble. One option is a package inclusive of white sailor shirt with square back collar flap, blue pants, belt, anchor tattoo muscle arms and a sailor hat. Finish your look with black low-cut boots and pipe. Another variation is comprised of a mask, sailor shirt with attached muscular arms and pants with belt. Most of these costumes are available from male standard sizes to triple X large.

One more option for you is to make your own costume. Popeye costumes are very easy to handle as you will only need very simple materials. These materials can be found right from your own closet or in some thrift shops. The first thing you have to do is to gather the materials. You will need a sailor’s cap, sailor-style peacoat or navy coat, bell-bottom pants and cornbob pipe. If you cannot find bell-bottom pants, you can also use khakis or blue slacks. Stuff the bottom of your pants with newspaper to have that flared look. As for the shoes, find low rise work boots. Either a black, dark brown or dark blue pair would be fine. For the hat, look for it some novelty stores or if you relatives who had been in the service, better borrow one from them.

Another important accessory for Popeye is the anchor tattoo on his forearm. You can have this distinguishing mark two ways. Your first option is to print out a copy of Popeye’s tattoo. Using face paint or skin sensitive markers, copy the design. Your other option is very easy as you would only need to look for temporary tattoo stickers. Lastly, Popeye would never last a day without munching on his goodies. You can either carry a can of real spinach or get creative. Find an empty can and a print out of the spinach label Popeye is addicted to. Stick the logo in the can and fill it with green strips of green paper. For more authentic looking spinach, soak the strips in water. Pile it up in the can.

If you could not find the peacoat, a plain white or navy blue shirt will do. You just have to make your own square back collar flap. For this separate project, you will need white fabric, blue ribbon, fabric glue or sewing materials and scissors. Cut out a pattern for the collar. Trace it onto the fabric and cut it out. Look out for sites that offer templates for this material. The next thing to do is to line the collar with the ribbon. Once the detailing is settled, attach the collar by sewing or with use of fabric glue. If you want the shirt to be reusable for other purposes, the stitch to use is some loose running stitches so you can easily remove the collar from the shirt.

These suggestions can surely make all Olive Oyls swept off their feet and all the Brutuses scramble away.
